design as
a junction
between the
formal and
the ephemeral
The conference paper
and presentation
for the design
communication
association served
as an extension of
research for the
project displayed
previously within
the portfolio,
“Within the city,
Beyond the south.”
The research
investigation
sought to gain
narratives, stories,
and insights from
community members
and visitors at the
second Asian night
market hosted by the
Vietnamese American
community.
To undergo this
task, an exploration
of ephemeral
architecture was
done through a
cultural stall
within the larger
Asian night market
to see how visitors
would directly
engage with the
space that was
demarcated within
the larger whole.
This could be seen
within the lower
photograph with
visitors engaging
the participatory
site table while
others who seek
to not engage can
circulate into and
out of the cultural
stall without being
disturbed of viewing
the content.
The results from the
extended research
project led to an
overall appreciation
towards the area’ᥓ
visibility and the
stories that have
layered across its
history. This could
be seen through
supporting visitors
who identified with
both the Vietnamese
tenants that
previously lived
within the area
addressed as well as
the workers who help
operate the farm
that exists on the
land currently.
