cornerstone
on broad ave.
The Cornerstone
is a multifamily
dwelling that
houses six studiolike units within
a 40x40 square
foot lot developed
within design
studio 2 across a
series of 6 weeks.
This apartment
building is one
that would sit at
the junction point
between a historic
neighborhood and
a new development
directly across from
said neighborhood.
It was within this
project that the
building would
convey its adherance
to both the old
homes and the new
development through
its materiality and
its orientation.
The building is
cladded with a brick
that was tailored
to that seen within
the historical
homes whereas the
interior chasis was
cladded with metal
panels to enter the
new development
with more refined
materials. The
primary design
moves, however, is
seen within the
orientation of the
building and the
shape of the units
within. Rather than
having the entry
sequence open out
towards the historic
north or the new
development in the
east, the primary
entry sequence is
off a 45 degree
axis to open out
towards both without
choosing one area
over the other.
This design intent
follows through into
the individual units
with the kitchen
being able to view
out towards both
areas as well. While
the orientation may
have created harsh
angles for the
units, it allows for
a unique spacial
organization that
sectionalizes spaces
with full walls,
half walls, and
implied barriers
due to circulation
paths.
