THE PATH TO
MONASTICISM IS A SIX
WEEK ADVANCED DESIGN
STUDIO PROJECT SITED
IN DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS
AND DESIGNED TO BE A
MIXED-USE MONASTERY
WITH AN INTEGRATED
BREWERY CALLING UPON
BREWING CULTURE
PRESENT WITHIN
HISTORIC MONASTICISM
AND THE LOCAL CITY.
THE SYNTHESIS OF
THESE DIVERGENT
PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS
CREATE A DUALITY OF
SPACES JOINED BY AN
EXTERIOR PATH THAT
ALLOW BOTH THE ONSITE RELIGIOUS AND
GENERAL PUBLIC TO
CIRCULATE UP TOWARDS
SACRED SPACES OR
CIRCULATE DOWN
TOWARDS SECULAR
SPACES. THE MONASTIC
LIFE BECOMES THE
BINDING ELEMENT
BETWEEN THESE SPACES
BY ALLOWING THE
RELIGIOUS TO ACCESS
THEIR DAILY TASKS
ON THE EXTERIOR
PATHWAY DEMARCATED
BY LIGHTING.
THE UTILIZATION OF
THIS PATH ULTIMATELY
DESIGNATES THE
HUMAN BODY AS THE
Prominent EXTERIOR
MATERIAL BY ALLOWING
THE FACADE TO BE
CREATED BY THE
DAILY PROCESSION OF
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE
THROUGHOUT THEIR
SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES
SUCH AS PRAYING
HOURS WITHIN THE
CHAPEL ABOVE OR
WORKING HOURS WITHIN
THE BREWERY AND TAP
ROOM BELOW.

LAYOUT
ORIENTATION
FORM
The interior of the worship space follows the
traditional layout of a Catholic cathedral with
aspects such as the apse, nave, and arcade
finding presence within the space. These two
elements were traditionally found in pilgrimage
churches that allowed for chaplets to be prayed
on the perimeter of the church as the mass was
being held in the nave.
The orientation of the space in reference to the
cells on the level below takes precedent from
ancient Greek-Orthodox monasteries in which
these two programs would often be found
on oblique axes rather than parallel ones to
differentiate the spiritual from the mortal life.
The form of the space itself differs from the rest of
the site in that it is the only space that punctures
outside of the boundaries set by the circulation
paths. This form creates the apse that captures the
airspace above the mausoleum wall as a way
to juxtapose the contrast between an elevated
spiritual life transcending above mortal death.

MATERIALITY
The materiality of the urban monastery is one that calls out the sacred nature
of the building through its golden panels while juxtaposing it against raw,
ordinary materials as a way to portray humility of humanity. The concrete
has a cold nature to contrast the gold while the wood panel flooring fosters a
sense of comfort by complimenting the warm palette of the golden panels.
